Luther cool, hot and such a thrill

-

CHANCES are, if you already love Bradley Walsh you’ve also fallen for his son Barney.

Bradley Walsh & Son: Breaking Dad on ITV onwednesday was a father son road trip across America that hit the travelogue sweet spot. The concept was simple. Barney, 21, tries to put Bradders into as many testing situations as possible. Whether it was facing the bulging abs of the men at Muscle Beach or jumping out of a plane, Bradley gave everything a go while Barney, who has the same mischievous twinkly blue eyes as his dad, laughed a lot.

What a chip off the old block. LUTHER just oozes cool, doesn’t he? The hulking, hunk of a man that is Idris Elba has such on-screen presence that we are all transfixed, despite the unending trauma of it all.

Back with a hint of the silver fox about him now and a swagger so extreme he looks like he might launch into a breakdance at any moment, Idris is the maverick London copper that everyone swoons over, cracking clues like a hot Columbo.

OK, so Luther could probably do with a new suit and car. And his shabby flat makes me feel sad every time I see it.

But he’s got his own Twitter emoji now, so he’s definitely made it.

He was back for the fifth run of the grim thriller. Unbelievably creepy, it’s responsible for several million fans losing sleep for four exhausting nights in a row.

I nearly fell off the sofa when that bloodied man was flung against a basement window in the first scenes. Then Luther was tasered, a man was sobbing naked in a clown mask. Don’t get me started on all the masks. There was a jar of eyes and tongues that even Nick Knowles wouldn’t have downed in a Bushtucker Trial.

And one poor soul had been used as an oversized pin cushion. Luther and Benny racing to remove a ticking bomb from Errol – later shot by the world’s poshest assassin – was heart-in-mouth stressful viewing. The fantasy family of posed murder victims made me nauseous.

I will never ride a night bus again. Note to self to also be wary of people asking for directions or delivering flowers.

Or delivering anything. In fact, I may never answer my front door again. BBC1 drama is not doing much for London Transport or Interflora at this point.

If that wasn’t enough, Cold Feet’s Hermione Norris was brilliantly chilling as therapist pist Vivien, married to murderer most horrid orrid Doctor ‘ don’t trust him’ Jeremy Lake. I get irritated if I have to pick up my husband’s socks but Vivien was prepared to dismember and dispose of a human for her hubby with little more than a resentful eye roll. #Relationshipgoals.

“You out tonight?” she asked at one point. Meaning: “You off on a murder spree or are you back for dinner?”

They discussed their victims while drinking wine on their posh sofa.

And I haven’t even got to the biggest shocker of all – Alice was alive, having faked her death. “Wotcha,” she muttered as fans cheered at the sight of the marvellous Ruth Wilson.

By the end, however, Alice fell from scaffolding after a tense stand-off with Luther. So NOW is she dead? How many lives does she have? And will the misunderstood Luther end up behind bars?

I was hooked throughout this master class in thrillers, although I may lie awake all night worrying about that cliffhanger.

As Luther migh might say: “Fair do’s.”

bursting into a ditty. The musical is so deeply engrained now, this was just weird.

Director Andrew Davies has blasted the musical a “travesty”. How dare he!

Of course, the cast was first-rate – Dominic West, Olivia Colman, David Oyelowo and Derek Jacobi to name a few. But the drama only inspired me to dig out the CD.

I won’t watch tonight, I’ll be dreaming a dream of time gone by.
