Dumped pups are saved

- By Karen Rockett

THESE adorable puppies are hoping for a brighter year ahead after being dumped on a cold, dark street last week.

Named Packham, Twiggy and Harry after celebs who made the New Year’s Honours list, the two boys and girl were found frightened and freezing.

RSPCA Inspector Suzi Smith said: “We are appealing for information about the puppies, thought to be around eleven weeks old, who we believe were abandoned overnight.

“We’re hoping somebody will recognise them and help us find out how they came to be abandoned.”

The pups, found in Mitcheldean in the Forest of Dean, Gloucs, on December 30, are in the RSPCA’S care.

Volunteers named them after conservationist Chris Packham, model Twiggy and World Cup hero Harry Kane, who all received honours. They will be available for rehoming soon.

Many other animals were rescued by the RSPCA over the Christmas period but not all were so lucky.

Petplanuk. merle pup was dumped on Christmas Day in a cardboard box in an alley in Bradford. RSPCA inspector Dave Holgate took him to a vet.

“Unfortunately the little crossbreed puppy was in a terrible state,” he said.

“He was collapsed at the rear and was dragging his back legs. It seems as though his back end was paralysed and he was unable to use his legs.

“Goodness knows how long the poor pup had been in this state. He may have been born like this or could have deteriorated as he grew.

“I suspect he was abandoned by the breeder when they realised he would need expensive veterinary treatment or would fail to sell.”

Because he was suffering and unlikely to recover, he was put to sleep.

Inspector Holgate added. “It’s so sad we weren’t able to save this little puppy but I’m just glad he’s no longer sitting inside a cardboard box cold, frightened and in pain,

“At least he felt love and compassion in his final hours.”

MY dog is a terrier. I hear they are more at risk from certain types of illnesses or diseases. What are these and what can I do to prevent them?
