Sammut: I still have sofa to go

- By Gareth Walker

JARROD SAMMUT was laid on his couch fielding offers from part-time clubs when Super League champions Wigan came calling.

The 31-year-old Australian has played at the top of the sport on both sides of the world but hadn’t featured in Super League since 2015.

But Wigan coach Adrian Lam (below) saw him as perfect competition for the half-back places and handed him a two-year deal that the player is keen to make the most of.

Sammut told Mirror Sport: “Once I left London I found myself on the couch for the first week in a place of uncertainty.

“I had a few Championship and League One clubs come in but it was all on a part-time basis.

“I was trying to get my head around how else I would provide for my family and come up with a job in the real world.

“I count my lucky stars that a club such as Wigan came forward, and now

I’ve got the opportunity to play for one of the prestige clubs in Super League.

“I’d really like to lift my game here – I’ve still not reached my peak or best rugby.”

Sammut and the rest of the squad spent last week in Cumbria on a teambuilding exercise, making rafts and climbing mountains with rocks in their rucksacks.

He added: “Once we got to the top it was a weight lifted off our shoulders and a sentiment of accomplishment for the effort everybody put it.

“It was fun and challenging, and the raftbuilding turned into a freefor-all with everyone thrown overboard and having to swim to shore.

“It wasn’t great at the time but it’s good to look back on and took us out of our comfort zones.”
