Call for cop to tell all at inquest on soldier

THE family of a boy soldier who died at Deepcut barracks are fighting for the cop who caught Levi Bellfield to speak at a fresh inquest.

Detective Chief Inspector Colin Sutton’s capture of Bellfield in 2004 was celebrated in ITV’S Manhunt this week.

Two years earlier Mr Sutton had investigated the “suicide” of Private Geoff Gray, 17, who was shot twice in the head at Deepcut, near Camberley, Surrey.

Mr Sutton alleged that he was told by Surrey Police and the Army:

“This was suicide – go out and prove it.”

An inquest had just recorded an open verdict into the death, one of four from gunshots at the base amid bullying claims.

Mr Sutton left to join the Met Police in London before the investigation concluded.

Now a new inquest has been ordered after police handed Pt Gray’s family 30,000 pages of evidence following a

High Court ruling.

The Sunday People understands Mr Sutton has submitted a written statement to the new inquest but the coroner has ruled that he should not give spoken evidence.

Pt Gray’s father Geoff, 55, of East London, said: “We want Colin to stand up and give evidence.

“He holds the key to finding how our son died. We have new evidence and he should be there to share his views.”
