STRIFE OF BRYAN Baffled Ranieri: They have ZERO shots... and score TWICE

- By STEVE MILLAR at Turf Moor

TALK about shooting yourself in the foot when points mean life or death.

Burnley didn’t have one shot on target in this basement battle – but still came out winners to climb away from the danger zone. Own-goals from Joe Bryan and Denis Odoi put Sean Dyche’s men on track for victory.

Andre Schurrle’s scorcher had given Fulham an early lead at a ground where their last win in the top flight was in 1951.

Burnley couldn’t believe their luck in recording their third successive league win, and remain unbeaten in their last 30 home matches against Fulham in all competitions.

That makes bleak reading this morning for Fulham boss Claudio Ranieri, whose strugglers are the only side yet to claim an away win this season.

He said: “We scored very, very early. A great goal. But in 10 minutes they scored twice with two own-goals. This experience is very strange. What can we do? They did not touch the goal but touch my players. That’s it. It’s a bad moment.

“But we never give up. We continue to believe that at the end we will be safe.”

Burnley manager Dyche said: “Three wins in the Premier League is good for the mentality. Good for the points and good for the table.

“It’s strange we didn’t have a shot on target, but you have got to find a way to win. That’s the pleasing thing, to win games which are really tight.

“We’re getting our way back. It’s another big step forward, but we can still be better than that.

“I can understand Claudio’s frustrations, but I don’t think they asked that many questions. We stayed calm and grew into the game.”

You would have been hard pressed to predict action and goals with this fixture. Two struggling teams aren’t usually the recipe for fun.

But how wrong the doubters were with three goals, and enough near misses, to warm a crowd gazing out at gale-force action on the pitch – and in the skies. Barely two minutes were on the clock when Fulham shocked cked

Turf Moor by taking a sensational lead.

Odoi played the ball into the box, Schurrle controlled brilliantly and volleyed into the top corner.

Burnley, with defender der

Ben Mee outstanding, responded with a Phil Bardsley delivery which Chris Wood headed on to the upright with keeper Sergio Rico well beaten. But in the 20th minute, the Clarets grabbed the equaliser when Jeff Hend Hendrick smashed goalwards an and the ball was deflected in b by Bryan.

And Burnley stormed into the lead three minutes later when Hendrick’s cross w was diverted home by Odoi w with his head.

R Ranieri (above) just stood and looked on – bewildered at what he had witnessed. Although, the smile should have returned to his face with two counter-attacks which could have hit the net.

First, Calum Chambers clattered the bar with a header and then Ryan Sessegnon missed from close range.

Just after the break, Fulham should have been level. Luciano Vietto blasted for goal, but James Tarkowski cleared off the line to impress watching England boss Gareth Southgate.

And again the lively Vietto thought he’d equalised, but his fierce drive was confidently saved by Tom Heaton as Burnley faded alarmingly.
