But the plastic items have been put back on display where they are freely available to customers. Campaign group Friends of the Earth said: “The company is taking a backward step.
“While we understand Pret will be moving t owards compostable cutlery in the near future, we’d urge the store to move its disposable plastic cutlery back behind the counter and encourage their customers to bring their own.
“If we’re to really tackle plastic pollution and move towards a circular economy, then we must end our throwaway culture for good.”
Greenpeace spokeswoman Fiona Nicholls said: “Businesses like Pret should be getting rid of t hr o waway c ut l e r y altogether.
“Anything less is out of step with public opinion and will lead to disposable cutlery entering our oceans.”
The company, which has 360 stores in the UK, faced a backlash when it brought in wooden spoons following the plastics ban.
Customers complained they were too small and they were withdrawn.
Pret said: “Following customer feedback, we have decided to move the plastic cutlery back to the shop floor.”
Pret said degradable cutlery will be introduced in all UK shops by the end of the year.
