Heading off the migraine misery

ANYONE who is laid low by migraines knows they are far worse than just a simple headache.

The miserable disorder afflicts about one in seven people worldwide, says The Migraine Trust.

More than 75 per cent of sufferers endure at least one bout a month, while women are three times more like than men to get the condition.

At best the symptoms are uncomforta­ble and debilitati­ng. At worst they can include sensitivit­y to light and sound, loss of vision and a pounding head.

Here are a few tips to help you reduce migraines.

EXERCISE

Regular exercise may prevent migraines.

Moderate activity was found to reduce the frequency and severity of the disorder in some people, according to a 1992 study published in the National Library of Medicine.

Exercise releases endorphins, a natural pain controllin­g chemical, and enkephalin­s, a natural antidepres­sant. Swimming, cycling, jogging or power walking are all good examples of moderate exercise.

GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP going to bed at the same time every day, even at weekends.

Trying to unwind at the end of the day and do something relaxing can also help, as can having no distractio­ns in the bedroom like phones or television­s. RIBOFLAVIN

Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, has been found to have a positive affect on sufferers. Research by the Humbolt University of Berlin found patients taking riboflavin for migraines – alongside some convention­al treatment – reported a reduction i n the frequency of their attacks and in the need for medication. Riboflavin can be found naturally in lean meats, eggs, legumes, nuts, leafy greens and milk. ACUPUNCTUR­E several thin needles into the skin, usually up to 20.

Studies have found that, along with convention­al treatment, acupunctur­e can help reduce migraines even more.

A study published on The Migraine Trust website looked at patients suffering from migraines who were given 12 sessions of acupunctur­e over three months.

It found 34 per cent had fewer headaches, there was 15 per cent less medication needed and 15 per cent fewer days off work. BOTOX
