- By Russell Myers in Cape Town

THE caring Duchess of Sussex ties a ribbon to a memorial for a murdered South African student after personally giving condolences to the 19-year-old’s mother.

Meghan, 38, paid the moving tribute to Uyinene Mrwetyana at the post office where the University of Cape Town student was raped and murdered last month.

The Duchess had written on the ribbon in the local language Xhosa: “We stand together in this moment.” The official Instagram account of Meghan and husband Prince Harry said they had been following the uprising sparked by Uyinene’s death and were “eager to learn more”. It added: “The Duchess spoke to the mother of Uyinene this week to relay their condolences.”

It said Meghan went to pay her respects and to show solidarity with protesters against gender-based violence and femicide.

The post added: “Visiting the site of this tragic death and being able to recognise Uyinene, and all women and girls effected by gender- based violence was personally important to the Duchess.”

A 42-year-old male post office employee has been arrested over the killing.

Meghan is staying in South Africa with four- month- old son Archie while Harry makes official visits across the continent.

In Cape Town she has met South African women leaders to discuss the struggles they face and the causes of gender-based violence.

In Angola, Harry met President Joao Lourenco and is likely to have discussed the country’s £48million pledge to help clear landmines – a project championed by Harry’s late mum Princess Diana.

And first lady Ana Dias Lourenco told Harry about her Born Free to Shine campaign to stop the rise of HIV in Angola.

Harry flies to Malawi today before being reunited with his wife and son in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
