UNI HALLS TRAGEDY
A STUDENT was last night fighting for life after falling 20ft from a balcony at his halls of residence.
The 19-year-old plunged from the second floor walkway at 3.50am yesterday.
One student said he was told the teenager was “not moving” on the ground.
Nottingham Trent University was carrying out “urgent investigations” as police yesterday cordoned off Hampden Halls accommodation in the city centre and taped off the balcony.
The young man’s traumatised flatmates are receiving support from the university.
Product design student Jake Pearson said: “I feel really bad for that person.”
Officers said the man was taken to hospital with “lifethreatening injuries” but they were not treating the incident as suspicious.
The uni, which has 30,000 students across four campuses, won University of the Year 2017 in the Times Higher Education Awards, seen as the Oscars of the education sector.
New students enjoyed Freshers’ Week at the end of September, with events put on across the city.
A uni spokesman said: “We are supporting the friends and flatmates of the student at this worrying time. The safety and wellbeing of our students is our first priority. The residence is managed by UPP and we will be carrying out an urgent joint investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
