Monster sues jail for Open Uni ban

A JAILED killer linked to the unsolved disappearance of Suzy Lamplugh has claimed HE is the real victim in the case.

Twisted John Cannan’s whinge came as Suzy’s family begged for his parole bid to be refused.

Cannan told the Sunday People that police have “smeared” him and are ruining his chances of getting out of jail.

He is eligible for release in 2022 after more than 30 years locked up for killing Shirley Banks in October 1987.

But the murderer says detectives who repeatedly link him to the suspected murder of Suzy, 25, are harming his bid for freedom.

Public school educated

Cannan, 64, told us: “I am concerned the police will use Suzy’s disappearance to undermine my parole prospects.

“Smearing me has become the rule not the exception.

“I had no involvement in the disappearance of

Suzy Lamplugh.”

Cannan further claims t he Met police were “determined to use me as a convenient peg to hang the disappearance upon”.

But Suzy’s brother Richard,

59, is furious at the killer’s claims. He said: “I don’t know Cannan but I don’t care for him at all. He was convicted of the murder of another girl and I’d be happy for him to be kept in prison.

“He will tell us what happened to Suzy when he is ready.

“If he’s done it I would like him to tell us her whereabouts so we can bury her where we want to bury her.”

Tapes

Estate agent Suzy went missing in July 1986 after going to keep an appointment with a “Mr Kipper” to show him around a house in Fulham, West London.

Police named Cannan as the prime suspect in Suzy’s disappearance in 2002, but the CPS said there was not enough evidence for a trial.

Officers have hav carried out digs i in recent years to find her remains, rema i ncluding ncl a search sear of the garden at Cannan’s mother’s old home. Last year VHS tapes of police interviews with the killer were published after reportedly being found in a South London skip.

But Cannan, who claims he now needs a wheelchair after a stroke, insisted: “Being continuously linked to the Lamplugh disappearance has me puzzled and powerless as I had no involvement. I cannot disclose the whereabouts of Suzy Lamplugh because I didn’t kill her.”

In 1989 Cannan, a former car salesman, was jailed for life at Exeter crown court for murdering factory worker Shirley Banks, 29, in Bristol.

He was also convicted of the attempted kidnap of Julia Holman the night before he snatched Shirley, and the rape of a woman in Reading a year earlier. Cannan was given a whole life tariff, later reduced to a 35- year minimum. Retired Det Supt Jim Dickie, who spent six years investigating Suzy’s abduction, said: “Cannan is still a suspect, there’s no doubt. “He obviously believes he is going to get parole but he’s extremely manipulative and must not be trusted.”

The 18 hours of VHS tapes showing Cannan interviewed about Suzy at Hammersmith police station, West London, in 2000 came to light last November. He was asked: “What have you done with her body?”

Clearly marked with the name John Cannan, the videos date from the Met polices’s Operation Phoebus, a re-investigation of the case.

Cannan told us: “As for my police interview tapes allegedly being found in a skip, I lodged a formal complaint with the Metropolitan Police. I do not have any confidence in them.”

Cannan had a stroke in Category A HMP Full Sutton, East Yorks, earlier this year.

“He complains it makes him “exhausted” all the time.

“It has caused me partial paralysis down my left hand side and played havoc with my balance,” he said. “My memory has diminished.”

Cannan’s l awyer, Matthew Claughton of Olliers Solicitors, said they were continuing to support his denial of Suzy’s murder.

CA MURDERER is suing a prison governor for banning him from an

Open University course.

David Ferguson – who slashed a woman’s throat while acting out a rape fantasy – claims his “educational development” is being stifled.

The killer, banged up for life in HMP Wakefield, said on a blog updated by a pal outside: “This is a shameful state of affairs.”

But not as shameful as what he did to school dinner lady and mum-oftwo Susan Kent, 33, who was found handcuffed and mutilated at her home in Gillingham, Kent, in 1999. A jury at 49-yearold Ferguson’s trial heard how he had tried to set up an online UK “rape club” describing women as “pieces of meat”.

Now he is serving 20 years at the notorious Yorkshire nick dubbed Monster Mansion because of its collection of cons.

His latest blog said: “Due to the prison’s obstruction to my distance learning studies I have submitted a civil court claim.” He also bleats that he is going for parole even though it is “all but impossible”.

Ferguson, who married penpal Carol Nash four years ago, claims he can prove his innocence.

The Ministry of Justice said it could not comment because of continuing legal proceedings. It is believed to be fighting Ferguson’s claim.
