Ty smashes Potters jinx

-

TEENAGE terror Tyrese Campbell fired struggling Stoke to a priceless first home league win in nearly EIGHT months.

Campbell’s clinical 16thminute strike and Lee Gregory’s late penalty saw the Potters end the Cottagers impressive six-game unbeaten run and climb off the bottom of the table.

And a huge win for the hosts helped ease some of the pressure on under-fire boss Nathan Jones.

The Welshman admitted the sack was close after a miserable start to the season.

But back-to-back wins for the first time since he took charge in January will give Jones more time to put things right.

“That home win’s been a long time coming,” he said.

“We felt we were in a false position and the points were coming if we could just eradicate errors and the rub of the green levelled itself out.

“We haven’t been far off performances like that, to be honest with you, but when you’re trying to set your stall out we’ve made big errors.

“But we knew that would even out, it’s a case of coming through that period. We believe we’re coming through that period.”

And Jones showered special praise on Campbell for waiting patiently for his chance to shine.

“I’m pleased for him,” said Jones. “He has a lot of attributes which are very pleasing for a manager.

“He’s got pace and the lad can finish. He’s had to be patient and trust us with his development, but now we’re starting to see a little bit.”

Campbell, son of the former Everton and Arsenal striker Kevin, made only his second league start of what has been a sorry season for the Staffordshire club.

But the 19-year-old grabbed the opportunity as the Potters won at home for the first time since a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest back in March.

It was also Campbell’s first-ever league goal for Stoke. And Gregory’s cool 80th-minute penalty, after substitute Scott Hogan had been fouled by keeper Marcus Bettinelli, made sure of maximum points.

Fulham boss Scott Parker stressed: “It’s a defeat. It’s not a head-on collision and it’s not something which is a massive issue, but it’s a bump. How we bounce back will ultimately determine how we do this year.” STOKE FULHAM 5 ........ Shots on Target .........4 1 .........
