Wenger to mind the gap

- By Simon Mullock

ARSENE WENGER’S return to management with Bayern Munich hinges on whether the German giants see him as a short-term fix.

The Frenchman (above) will hold talks with Bayern president Uli Hoeness this week.

Bayern want a young manager, with a similar style to former boss Pep Guardiola. Erik ten Hag is the No.1 choice for the job, especially now Ajax chief Marc Overmars has said his manager can go next summer.

But Wenger, who speaks fluent German, is right in the mix – depending on the length of the deal. However, he is understood to be reluctant to be a stop-gap.

Wenger has told friends this is the first job he has seen since leaving Arsenal after 22 years in 2018 that he really fancies.

He said: “I’m happy at what I do. I miss the pitch as well, so it is a difficult decision for me at the moment. I’ll make that decision in the coming days or the coming week.

“Bayern is a club where they play positive football. They are not scared to want the ball and take the game to the opponent.’’

Ruud Gullit, who works alongside Wenger in Doha for TV channel bein Sports, has urged the 71-year-old to take the job.

The Holland legend said: “It will be fascinating to see him back in management and especially at a club like Bayern, who play in such a dominant way.”

Ajax technical director Overmars, who played under Wenger at Arsenal, has said he will not stand in Ten Hag’s way, despite him having three years left on his contract.
