Jeanvier pays for red mist

- By RICHARD TANNER at the DW Stadium

WIGAN’S Joe Gelhardt was carried off unconscious as Brentford’s fourth win in five games was marred by ugly scenes in added time.

Bees’ Julian Jeanvier was red-carded for violent conduct while Gelhardt was taken to hospital after he collided with team-mate Kieffer Moore, who went in hard on Brentford sub

Dom Thompson. It sparked a furious bust-up, with Wigan midfielder Joe Williams restrained and Jeanvier dismissed by ref Andy Davies for throwing a punch.

The Bees had been in control but boss Thomas Frank regretted the fracas.

He said: “Moore looked like he wanted to take our player out and ended up taking out our player and his own player. It sparked a confrontation and after that our players didn’t do the best move.

“I really hope Gelhardt is OK.”

Wigan boss Paul Cook agreed that there was no need for the ugly scenes at the end

He said: “Gelhardt’s gone to hospital with his mum but he was speaking in the ambulance so fingers crossed that works out well.

“But the game was done – there was no need for mass confrontations.”

Wigan were already down to 10 men at the time after Cedric Kipre’s second booking.

Bryan Mbeumo put the Bees on their way after five minutes when Wigan keeper David Marshall parried away a header from Danish midfielder Christian Norgaard.

Kamo Mokotjo added the second goal with 20 minutes left – a first- time shot after a Josh Dasilva cross was only partially cleared.

And Dasilva made it 3-0 from 25 yards late on.
