Pop legends’ fave tracks

I’VE just spent three weeks on a canal boat for Channel 5 – with, among other noted celebs and influencers, Pete Waterman.

Pete, as you may recall, was one third of the renowned Stock, Aitken, Waterman trio of record industry geniuses who made the careers of so o many big pop names throughout the 80s, such as Kylie Minogue.

I got to know him a bit, as you do, over a three-week shoot with lots of eating, talking and boating. And he’s a fascinating character, a veritable polymath.

We had at least one thing in common – we both love model railways.

He, of course, does them big time – he has a warehouse full of priceless specially crafted model engines and a layout that perfectly embodies, to scale, the station where he used to live in Leamington Spa. I lived there in the 90s. Astonishing.

What an obsession and a really quirky talent can achieve.

Similarly, this week Rod Stewart proudly showed off his completed model railway layout.

The multi-talented superstar goes home in the evenings and potters around with his model railway like so o many others who are considered “nerds” – going to the attic or, as I do, the spare bedroom… or, in his case, to a special building on his vast t estate. Brilliant. Wonderful. Reassuring. And so very British.
