It’s Crackers to ignore dog owner’s plight

-

POOR Cracker the Staffie was abandoned outside a church over Christmas by an owner who clearly loved him but needed greater help than his dog.

And while everyone has been so sad about poor Cracker, a name given to him by RSPCA rescuers, my worry is about the human in this story of festive despair.

His owner left him in a place of safety – the Sacred Heart Church in Blackpool – with a note that said: “My dog means the world to me and I don’t know what else to do. I’ve no home or money now for him.

“Life has taken a really bad turn for me and I couldn’t imagine him being outside, cold and hungry

Please, please please find a nice home for him. I will truly miss him more than words can say.”

The note also said the beloved pet would be turning seven in March and that he had sore front paws that his owner had been trying to treat.

While Cracker’s predicament breaks your heart, have no fears for him. I am sure he will be loved and looked after for the rest of his life. And his paws will be better soon.

I have far darker worries, though, about his human friend, who is probably sleeping rough somewhere nearby, his or her plight magnified by the loss of a friend, freezing hands and feet and no hope.

I trust there will be many charitable organisations with volunteers who could help, if they only knew how to find him.

It is a sign of his human spirit that he did the sensible and difficult thing by his dog, but failed to do for himself. I can only hope he has been traced, and helped. But I wonder.
