SERGIO ROMERO, the woodwork and VAR combined beautifully to keep Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s FA Cup dream intact.

The Argentine keeper produced a superb reflex stop and was backed up by the goalframe and officials at Stockley Park as the Red Devils lived to fight another day.

Romero, in as replacement for David de Gea who was rested, was on hand to prevent Matt Doherty giving Nuno Espirito Santo’s side a early breakthrough.

And then he was backed up – first when Raul Jimenez thundered an effort into the crossbar – and then when Doherty found the net with a late header. But even though Molineux erupted in jubilation, the strike was chalked off after consultation with the video officials.

The end result was a stalemate but the Norwegian will be demanding far more from his team in the replay if they are to add to their trophy haul in this competition this season.

Both managers went hard at the tie. There were changes but they were by no means wholesale – and arguably the hosts were weakened far more than the visitors.

Perhaps Solskjaer was mindful of the quarter-final defeat suffered at the same venue 10 months ago.

Where there was a common thread between the two was up front where changes were made in attack. The only highlight from a drab opening was two Wolves corners, the second of which brought a brilliant onehanded reflex stop from

Romero.

A near-post flick-on fell neatly to Doherty, loitering six yards out at the far post, unmarked.

The Ireland international connected sweetly but the

Argentine diverted the ball around the post after making a reflex save.

There were one or two half-chances, Adama Traore caused panic every time he received the ball, using h pace from a standing sta in-roads. But for the m game was pla midfield with forwards inv as much se an attack newspaper
