Rules for Perfect Murders – Peter Swanson, Faber – out Thursday

Mild-mannered book seller Malcolm writes a blog in which he gives details of his favourite fictional murders, only for a real killer to bring them to life – or rather death. This smart and super stylish thriller is a tremendously enjoyable love letter to crime fiction.

START this 1.2 mile lakeside walk by crossing the wooden bridge at Stowe, Bucks, and follow the lake to the Palladian Bridge and cross.

1 Go straight to the ruined Temple of Friendship, follow path past temple, take right fork to lake. 2 Continue on lake’s edge until you come out into the open, to reveal one of the best views at Stowe. 3 For a quick diversion, walk down between the two lakes to the Cascade. Return to path and on to next lake, until you reach a small temple.

4 Take the path towards the Temple of Venus. 5 Now follow path so that you walk along the bottom side of the lake, where you will turn again to keep on the lakeside path.

6 Continue to hug the lake on path as you go back into a wooded area.

7 Follow the lakeside path back to the wooden bridge. See nationaltrust.org.uk.
