The rise and fall of Brewster’s millions

- By John Richardson

THERE was an outpouring of goodwill from Merseyside when Rhian Brewster hit the winner in Sheffield United’s Carabao Cup win over Carlisle in August.

Many Liverpool fans had been surprised by their club’s decision to accept a £24million offer from the Blades last October and took to Twitter to celebrate his scoring breakthrough.

Manager Jurgen Klopp admitted that he wondered whether it had been the right thing to sell him.

Influential people within the club felt the England

Under-21 striker was another young Robbie Fowler or Michael Owen ready to make his mark.

Now, incredibly, Brewster cannot even claim a place on the Sheffield United substitutes’ bench.

But if you are judging the 21-year-old on his goals return since making the move 12 months ago then it is not such a surprise.

The goal against League Two Carlisle is his only one in a Blades shirt.

He has not hit the back of the net in 33 league appearances. As Sheffield United face Barnsley today at Oakwell, both manager Slavisa Jokanovic and Brewster are searching for a pick-me-up.

Brewster could do worse than search for Klopp’s words about him before the two clubs met in a Premier League game last season.

Klopp said: “I’m not going to lie, agreeing to that transfer was very hard.

“He is a natural-born goalscorer. It’s in his DNA. He is a coach’s dream.”

Jokanovic, who made the controversial option to completely leave out the club’s record buy, said: “He has qualities to help us. He has to be brave, work hard and be ready for his chance. “When I change my mind, he will

play.”
