Herbaceous perennials with fleshy roots can be propagated successfully from root cuttings during late autumn and winter. Verbascum, primula, Japanese anemones, acanthus, oriental poppies and phlox are all suitable species for this method.

November is traditional tulip planting season so get some pots sorted for a beautiful spring display.

Prune fruit bushes – redcurrants, gooseberries and blackcurrants – during dormant season.

Mulch bare soil. This should keep it mostly weed free until next spring and the gradual breaking down of the mulch will improve soil structure and fertility.

Continue to mow your lawn if it is still growing but try not to walk on frosty grass.

Blackspot on rose leaves will overwinter so pick up and dispose of any affected leaves.

Other indoor jobs include giving seed trays and pots a wash – using a bit of bleach to sterilise them – as well as cleaning and oiling gardening equipment such as secateurs, spades and forks.
