Ty’s high, Sam’s off

IT was a case of two substitute strikers, two very different stories.

For Stoke fan favourite Tyrese Campbell, the thrill of his first goal since suffering a serious knee injury 11 months ago.

For team-mate Sam Surridge, a red card and another dent in his bid to win over boss Michael O’neill following his summer move from Bournemouth.

Both their moments came in seven minutes of added time as Stoke moved up to fourth in the table.

Surridge’s battering-ram manoeuvre into the stomach of Josh Knight gave referee Geoff Eltringham no option – he booked the Posh player, too.

Almost immediately, Campbell collected Mario Vrancic’s pass, ran from deep, held off two defenders and finished in style.

O’neill said: “That was the first time we’ve seen the Tyrese of old.

“He was brought down at a time when he was flying, scoring goals, making assists. That goal for him is massive.”

If there was any lingering hangover from the last home match – when Stoke lost a three-goal lead against Cardiff – there was little sign of it.

Scoring inside three minutes helps, and there was an element of fortune which can swing a match one way or the other.

In this case Vrancic (above) benefited with a shot which took the biggest of deflections off Frankie Kent.

Posh deserved at least a draw, but required someone to put the ball in the net. Jack Taylor went closest when he rattled the crossbar.

Posh boss Darren Ferguson said: “I was pleased with the performance.

“We had 14 shots but only one on target, so we lacked a bit of quality.”
