Tennis rallied in fight with China
THE power of global sport CAN be a force for good. This week it was being harnessed to exert pressure on China over missing tennis star Peng Shuai.
If you didn’t see it, the country’s top player (below) – twice a doubles Grand Slam winner and former doubles world No.1 – vanished into thin air after making a sexual assault allegation against former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli.
China said Peng was alive and well. The USA wanted “independent, verifiable proof”.
The WTA said without it they would accept any financial hit and play NO events in
China next year – and then Novak
Djokovic backed the boycott “100 percent”.
Well played.
