Jennings (far left) says Ramsdale (above) is just like Van der Sar (second left)

PAT JENNINGS believes Aaron Ramsdale has had a transformative effect on Arsenal’s defence since forcing his way into the No.1 spot.

And the ex-gunners stopper has likened the England international’s impact to Edwin van der Sar’s arrival at Manchester United in 2005.

The Dutch legend helped Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to four Premier League titles and one Champions League in six seasons at Old Trafford after leaving Fulham at the age of 34.

Ramsdale, a £24million signing from Sheffield United doesn’t turn 24 until May but Jennings believes he has already helped settle Mikel Arteta’s team down.der

Jennings said: “It’s similar to when Van

Sar joined United. With respect to Fulham, he wasn’t getting rave reports there every week. Then he

goes to United, and with a stronger team around him you also see how a top class goalkeeper also works as part of that team.

“Van der Sar helped United’s defence to get more confidence and he also gained more as a goalkeeper because no matter how good you are you still need that team around you.

“For Ramsdale, his basic handling and agility is very good, sometimes he needs to settle down a bit in games, but that seems to be the same for all goalkeepers in the Premier League now.

“And you can see that he is also getting the best from his own defenders as well, he gets information out to them and seems to be a really good organiser.”

Jennings, who at 77 remains busy as coaching consultant with Spurs’ academy and Under-23 goalkeepers, added: “A goalkeeper needs to be able to work with their defenders, give instructions and help close the gaps in front before they even open up.

“That comes with experience, pushing players around and moving them when they need to.”
