Review has to be Don right
IT was around 8pm last Saturday when I arrived at Norton Canes services en route home from the Etihad.
A coach-load of blue-shirted supporters were milling around. They were AFC Wimbledon fans on their way back from Fleetwood.
The time they set off from south London for the Fylde coast doesn’t bear thinking about. They were still a good three hours from home when they crossed my path.
I thought about those Dons fans when the Government this week announced a white paper on the fan-led review by MP Tracey Crouch.
The Premier League immediately rejected the notion of an independent regulator. However, the Government’s plan needs to be embraced because football isn’t just about Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City and the rest.
It’s about those Wimbledon fans (above), too – whose loyalty is perhaps even more laudable as they aren’t in it for the glory.
They deserve to have their past and present protected. Under the former system, it wasn’t.
But the on-going survival of clubs like the Dons is fundamental to the future sustainability of the pyramid.
And don’t let anyone fool you into thinking otherwise.
JAMIE CARRAGHER and Gary Neville are excellent pundits.
But to avoid accusations of bias it might be a wise move for Sky to schedule Neville on Liverpool matches and
Carragher on
Manchester
United.
The pair (right) have intimate knowledge of their former clubs but
Carragher’s treatment of injured Everton player Richarlison during the Merseyside derby and Neville’s relentlessly downbeat assessment of Manchester United on Thursday suggests a fresh perspective might be in order.
