A spot of bother for England

-

skipper said: “We’ve got a massive game coming up on Tuesday.

“We need to look at this performance and learn from it very quickly.

“I thought we started off quite well. We need to tidy up and bounce back.

“We need to look at how we performed and how we move forward because these are big games for us.

“We have lost and it’s important we look at ourselves.”

It was Hungary’s first win over England in 60 years although the headlines will be dominated by the reaction by thousands of Hungarian kids just before kick-off.

Boss Gareth Southgate insisted his England players will continue to take the knee in their stand against racism.

Frustrated

And while he insisted he wanted to concentrate on the defeat and the games against Germany and Italy before the return against Hungary, he was frustrated by the reaction of the home crowd.

He said: “There were youngsters lining the streets before the game and they gave us some pantomime boos.

“But the reaction was totally different when we took the knee.

“It felt like inherited thinking – but I hear it in our stadiums as well.

“That’s why we do it, that’s why we take a stand, and we will continue to.”

Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham suffered racist abuse when England hammered Hungary in a World Cup qualifier last year.

There was no repeat of that kind of abuse – but Southgate questioned whether UEFA were right to relax the decision to play the game behind closed doors.

He added: “From a development perspective, I want the team to be playing in front of fans.

“So I am torn between that and what the punishment should mean.

“We are always trying to educate people around the world.

“Young people don’t know what they are doing so much, so they must be being influenced by adults.”
