TORIES who have been scratching their heads over just who to blame for the disastrous “levelling up” baloney have now come up with a surprise prime suspect.

The smart money is on the infamous former

Conservati­ve MP and diarist, the late Alan Clark.

Famous more for his accounts of amorous liaisons with the wives and daughters of the great and good, the cad used the term in a diary entry from May 1990. He complained that the “levelling up” expectatio­ns among the lower classes were making it impossible to find suitably subservien­t domestic staff – servants.
