Shilts’ wife to tackle gambling’s family toll

- Karen Rockett

PETER Shilton’s wife has started a job as a support worker helping families of gambling addicts.

The former England goalie, 72, had a gambling addiction for 45 years and wife Steph aims to draw on her own experience.

She has joined the Six to Ten Project – so called because six to ten people are typically affected by one problem gambler.

Steph and other workers will give one-to-one support to partners, children, parents or friends of addicts.

She said: “There tends to be a stigma but it’s a fullblown chronic illness.

“It’s no different to drug abuse. My husband went through full-blown withdrawal symptoms.

“Because I’ve been a loved one myself, I recognise how lonely and how difficult it is.”

Shilton had a 30-year playing career and is England’s most-capped player – but he has spoken of his shame at blowing his wealth on horse racing bets.

The Six to Ten Project is being piloted in the South West, North West and Wales and could be expanded if successful.
