Dedicated non follower of trashion

-

I WAS on holiday in Paris last week and visited a very swanky department store.

As my shoe-addict friend drooled over impossibly expensive Manolo Blahniks and Jimmy Choos, I wandered into the Balenciaga bit. And I was shocked to find someone had made off with a pair of new trainers, leaving their tatty old high-tops behind. Until a très chic shop assistant asked if I’d like to try on the limited-edition Paris

Sneakers which feature “distressed canvas and rough edges, giving them a pre-worn look that interprets mid-century athleticism and timeless casual wear”. Erm, non merci. Not at £1,200 a pair. Forget grunge, welcome to “trashion”, the trend that’s bred holey hoodies, mudcaked jeans, unravelled pullovers and a £485 frock

which looks like a black bin liner. Really? High fashion always has bonkers moments as designers show off their art, but trash fash has to be the ugliest fad ever. Because while millions are struggling to feed and clothe their children, the wealthy elite are

throwing away thousands on gear that makes them look like skip rats. It’s a form of poverty porn, and designers should be ashamed of themselves.
