Superhero is a Marvel for teenage girls

-

ANOTHER comic book hero gets their own TV series, with the coming-of-age story of Kamala Khan – an ordinary teenage girl who discovers she has superpowers.

In Ms Marvel on Disney+, Iman Vellani plays the 16-year-old Pakistani American from Jersey City, an Avengers superfan and hero wannabe.

Of course everyone at high school (which in US teen drama is the seventh circle of hell) thinks she is a weirdo, a girl who wears Avengers T-shirts and spends too much time in fantasy land. “Maybe they’re right,” she says. “It’s not really the brown girls from Jersey City who save the world.” Wrong!

Something cosmic happens and Kamala gets superpowers. But will this be the fantastic life she imagined?

Exploring themes of family conflict, friendships and acceptance, this is another action-packed addition to the Marvel Universe.

And not just for teens.
