You ask...

Hi Diarmuid

I have a beautiful hedge of red photinia but I’m hesitant to cut it in case I lose the red foliage. What should I do?

Hi Sheila

I’m guessing this is Photinia ‘Red Robin’ which makes a luxuriant hedge with its fresh red leaves.

You won’t destroy it by pruning – this fresh red foliage will come again next spring.

You can prune it now – spring and summer are ideal times. Cut back as much as you want, making a clean cut just above an outward facing bud.

You should thin out any over congested parts and anything that isn’t looking healthy.

Best wishes

Diarmuid
