A fire broke out in Grenfell Tower.
Shortly before 1am, a blaze ignited in a fourth-floor flat at the 24-storey property in west London. Within minutes, the flames spread up the exterior of the building and a major incident was declared.
With a “stay put” policy in place, many residents remained in their flats or fled to higher floors in the block but firefighters were unable to halt the fire’s spread. As a result, 72 people died.
