Flying away on holiday for the first time can be a bit stressful but factor in a baby and parental blood pressure goes sky high.

Never mind passports and boarding passes, there’s nappies and food to think of too.

And of course nobody wants their child to be distressed and disturbing other passengers.

A view to a loo It’s a good idea to board the plane with your baby wearing a fresh nappy.

Airport toilets are usually much roomier and better equipped than ones on the plane.

Seeing double Never underestim­ate the amount of baby necessitie­s you will need for a flight, especially if it’s long haul.

Bring twice as much formula, bottles, baby food and snacks on board than you think you’ll need. If your plane becomes severely delayed or cancelled, you’ll be grateful.

Layer up If it’s your baby’s first time flying, you may be tempted to doll them up in a cute outfit but think of comfort and convenienc­e.

You want them to be as comfortabl­e as possible to avoid any fussing.

And make sure their clothes are easy to change too.

Carry on with a carrier Managing luggage, coffee, boarding passes and food is complicate­d enough when travelling, so it’s worth getting a baby carrier and “wearing” your baby while you’re going through the airport.

Zip it Babies can be pretty messy so it’s a good plan to have zip-lock bags with you for disposing of their detritus rather than waiting for the crew to come around collecting rubbish. It will be easier to manage and your fellow passengers will also be grateful.

Transfer window Be sure to book your transfers to and from the airport in advance and specify that you will be travelling with a baby.

You don’t want to be hanging around the airport waiting with a little one in tow.

‘You’ time Flying with babies isn’t fun. Try not to stress, stay calm and be patient with yourself and your child.

There are usually friendly flight attendants on hand who will do what they can to make the journey go smoothly.
