City plan is grand for Doyle

- Ross Heppenstall

HIS late grandfathers were Manchester City legends and he has made seven first-team appearances for the club he joined as an eight-year-old.

Now, hot prospect Tommy Doyle is ready to write a new chapter away from the Etihad Stadium.

The midfielder, 20, has joined Sheffield United on a season-long loan, and he believes it can help him to realise his dream of first-team football under Pep Guardiola.

Academy graduate Doyle, who is contracted until 2025, spoke to boss Guardiola before heading to Bramall Lane.

He said: “We agreed it was vital for someone of my age to go out and play as much as possible to get first-team experience.

Dream

“I’ve been lucky enough to play for City in every competition – the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.

“City will always have a special place in my heart.

“It’d be a dream for me to play there every week and it’s something I’d love to do because that’s my club who I have grown up supporting.

“That’s the future because I appreciate where I am now at Sheffield United.

“It’s a massive club and hopefully I can help them get back in the top flight, which is my main goal.”

Doyle, who made his City debut in the Carabao Cup against Southampton in 2019, is inspired by his legendary late grandads.

Mike Doyle (above) played for City from 1965 until 1978 and won six trophies, while Glyn Pardoe became their youngest debutant at just 15 in 1962.

Tommy said: “What my grandfathers achieved is something I’ve appreciated more as I’ve got older.

“Having now played for the club, it was a massive honour for my family and I certainly take huge pride in what they did in the game.

“Now it’s time for me to create my own legacy and follow in their footsteps.”
