40C? You bet as heatwave blasts back
BRITAIN could soon be sweltering in 40C heat again – and London will be hotter than Lisbon this week.
Bookies make it odds-on at 4-5 for temperatures to hit 40C later this month.
Coral spokesman John Hill said: “July was a record-breaking month in the UK, and our betting suggests we could be set for something similar in August.”
Forecasters say temperatures will once again be in the low to mid-30s this week, hotter than Portugal’s capital.
The Met Office has warned there is “very little meaningful rain” on the horizon for parched areas of the country.
Chief forecaster Steve Willington said: “We could see parts of the UK entering heatwave conditions.”
Nick Finnis, of Netweather.tv, said: “Temperatures will potentially reach the low 30s across southern England from Tuesday to Friday.”
The North of England will also enjoy a hot spell with temperatures in Manchester climbing to 29C by Friday.
During the last heatwave, Pitsford in Northamptonshire broke records two days in a row.
On July 18, the village was joint-hottest place in the UK with 38.2C. The following day it recorded 40.2C,
Water companies are now asking customers to conserve water over fears of dwindling levels.
Southern Water is asking people “to limit your use to reduce the risk of further restrictions and disruption to water supplies but more importantly to protect our local rivers”.
South East Water said it had been “left with no choice but to restrict the use of hosepipes and sprinklers” to users from August 12 within Kent and Sussex until further notice.
