OUR NEW BABY BRINGS HOPE AFTER LOSS

- By Janine Yaqoob

SINGER John Legend has opened up about the loss of his son – as the star this week announced he and wife Chrissy Teigen are expecting a new baby.

The couple were heartbroken when their third child Jack was stillborn at 20 weeks.

But this week they revealed Chrissy is pregnant two years after their loss.

A the time the couple posted searing black-and-white photos of them cuddling Jack after massive blood transfusions failed to save him.

Speaking of their decision to go public with their ordeal,

John, 43, who had a massive

UK hit with All Of Me, said:

“It was difficult and I was hesitant to share it.

“But I think Chrissy was really right in encouraging us to share it because it was powerful for a lot of people.

Powerful

“Way more people than anyone realised go through this and I think they feel alone.

“They told us they felt alone. And us sharing our experience helped people feel less alone.

“I think it was a really powerful, wise decision for Chrissy to share it. It helped a lot of people. Those experiences, I was able to channel through the music.

“There’s no real comfort and you’re always going to feel that loss. It kind of spreads over time so it doesn’t feel as heavy over time but you’ll never forget it.”

John and model Chrissy, 36, already have daughter Luna, six, and son Miles, four.

On Wednesday Chrissy , who has had IVF treatment, posted a picture of her baby bump and announced: “Joy has filled our home and hearts again. One billion shots later (in the leg lately, as u can see!) we have another on the way.”

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs today, John reflects on his life and a career in which he has

won two Emmys, 12 Grammys, an Oscar and a Tony Award. He jokes: “I was at choir rehearsal in the womb, I like to say. “We were raised in a house full of music. We had a piano, a drum kit. I started taking piano lessons when I was three or four, I started singing in a church choir when I was seven.” Born John Stephen in Springfield, Ohio, in America’s mid-west, he explains how he got his stage name. “I didn’t choose the name. My friend, he started calling me the legend.” He says that taking on the name Legend was quite presumptuous before he had even got a record deal but adds: “I decided I’m going to try to live up to this name.” janine.yaqoob@people.co.uk Desert Island Discs, today, 11.15am, Radio 4
