Toff luck for Lampard as duo crocked

feels like it is a small fracture of his leg for Ben. We are assessing that. He will be out for a while. We had a bit of that last season, unfortunately. We’ll have to get through that.

“Mina is an ankle injury and could be out for a while. When it rains, it pours.”

It was the Toffees’ first defeat on the opening day in 11 years, the longest run by any team in the Premier League.

Jorginho made the breakthrough after Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure clattered Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell in the box with referee Craig Pawson immediately awarding a penalty.

Lampard added: “I thought we played well against a tough opponent.

“The penalty was the only difference between the teams. One tiny lack of focus and they got their goal. I felt a draw would be a fair result.”

Dynamic

Everton new boy James Tarkowski said: “Points are what it’s all about. Early on in the season you want your performances to be up there – that was the case today. We were dynamic and caused them problems.”

But Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was delighted as he saw his side win at Goodison for the first time since 2017.

He said: “A win is a win and this is super important. We played at Everton and we’ve struggled over recent years.

“We have things to improve upon but this isn’t a surprise.

“We are maybe not at the highest level – we have brought players in but they came in late, pre-season was a bit turbulent but the last week of training was promising.”

Liverpool had to twice battle back from a goal down to get a point at Fulham.

Aleksandar Mitrovic scored both Fulham’s goals, leaving defender Tim Ream purring: “It gives a big boost of confidence. Mitrovic is an animal and as long as he’s banging goals in we’re good.”

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp said: “The best thing about the game was the result. We got a point from a really bad game.”
