Rish steps on the gas

- By Mikey Smith

RISHI Sunak last night set out a plan to make Britain energy secure, including by boosting North Sea gas production, as he battles to make up ground against Tory leader rival Liz Truss.

The former Chancellor said he would legislate to make the UK energy independent by 2045 as he vowed to ensure there will be no repeat of the looming winter power crisis.

And he said that if he becomes Prime Minister on September 5, he would put in place immediate support for households faced with soaring energy bills.

Mr Sunak said: “We are facing an energy crisis and I have a plan to both get us through it and make sure this is a one-winter crunch.”

Mr Sunak said he would also reduce energy waste, with low-cost measures to insulate millions of homes.

A new energy department would lead the changes.
