‘Barbarian’ up Pompeii
A TOURIST was caught riding a moped through the ancient ruins of Pompeii.
Security stopped the 33-year-old Australian, dubbed The Barbarian by the Italian press, after he rode about a mile around the archaeological site.
The man, who has since been charged with unauthorised access, said he did not know he could not drive through the Italian city – destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 79AD.
The incident at the UNESCO world heritage site was over in minutes and no damage was caused. The man later apologised.
It came after two US tourists caused £21,000 of damage to two of the Spanish Steps in Rome by throwing e-scooters down them. A woman, 28, and man, 29, were each fined £338 for “purposely” launching a scooter down the 18th-century staircase.
