Wilder hoping Boro’s new boys can be Billy whizzes
CHRIS WILDER is hoping the old is eclipsed by the new when Middlesbrough face his former club Sheffield United at the Riverside today.
In the Blades’ squad will be veteran striker Billy Sharp, 36, the player who more than anyone, symbolised the club’s astonishing rise under Wilder.
The Boro chief counts him among the best players he’s ever managed. But he’s
The Riverside, Today, 2pm looking to a pair he’s only just started managing, to make the headlines in a showdown between two sides expected to be pushing for promotion.
Former Brentford man Marcus Forsss could make his full debut, while US international Matthew Hoppe is expected to be on the bench. Whatever their role this weekend, Wilder would love them to match the exploits of Sharp in the months and years ahead.
He said: “They are right at the start of their careers while Billy – and he won’t forgive me for saying it – is approaching the end.
“He was an outstanding talisman for me during a fabulous period for the club.
“Whenever you bring in a new player, you’d love them to be one of the best you’ve ever managed and if I got a few like Billy, we’d have half a chance.”
After adding Alex Mowatt on a season-long loan from West Brom yesterday, Wilder insists his recruitment drive is far from over.
He added: “We could have done ten more deals but we will not overpay.
“All I know is when the window shuts, we will be better and stronger.”
Meanwhile, Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom says midfielder Oli Arblaster, 18, can step up a level after playing in the Carabao Cup.
“It’s a big jump up but he’ll benefit,” he said. “It’s an eye opener and he knows what the levels are.”
