15 The Second World War ended with the surrender of Japan.

Just a few days after atomic bombs were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Emperor Hirohito announced his country’s surrender. Although Japan didn’t sign the formal document until September, people across the globe took to the streets to celebrate the end of the conflict, which had lasted six years. In the UK, US and Australia, two-day public holidays were declared.
