400 make a stand for Salman Karen Rockett

A 400-strong crowd carrying placards rally to support stabbed British author Salman Rushdie.

Cops guarded the hour-long event – called Stand With Salman; Defend the Freedom to Write – outside New York City’s public library.

Rushie, 75, was knifed on August 12. He spent years in hiding after Iran’s leader Ayatollah Khomeini called for his death in 1989 but later returned to normal life. Muslims condemned his novel The Satanic Verses as blasphemou­s.

Rushdie is said to be improving in hospital. Hadi Matar, 24, has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.
