Tyrese terrorises Boro but Ince will stay ‘on his case’

- By RON LEWIS

READING boss Paul Ince tipped Tyrese Fornah for the top after his stunning strike sent the Royals rocketing up to third in the Championship table.

Ince hailed the Nottingham Forest loanee after his first-half screamer secured Reading a second successive home win following the 3-0 midweek thumping of Blackburn.

“I don’t like to single people out for praise but I will do that today because Ty was immense,” he said.

“I know he can be a top player and in the last two games he’s been absolutely outstanding.

“I’m always on his case because I know when I was a 22-year-old midfielder, people were always on to me like Bryan Robson and Mark Hughes.

“But it wasn’t just about his goal – there’s a growing maturity in his game.

“He was brilliant, his passing, his composure and he finished it off with a cracking goal.”

Fornah, who spent last season on loan at League One side Shrewsbury, broke the deadlock in the 28th minute to light up a contest that was high on endeavour but low on inspiration.

Fornah’s moment of magic came when he let fly with a perfectly executed 22-yard half-volley that whistled past Boro goalkeeper Zack Steffen.

But the visitors only have themselves to blame because it was a weak header from defender Marc Bola that invited Fornah to try his luck.

Until then Boro had looked comfortable but lacked a cutting edge in attack and only in the latter stages were Reading hearts in mouths.

It looked as though referee James Linington had pointed to the spot when substitute Matt Crooks tumbled in the penalty area. Hopes of a reprieve were cut short, though, as his assistant flagged for offside and Reading breathed a collective sigh of relief.

Boro boss Chris Wilder later laid into his players following a defeat that leaves his side secondbottom of the table.

“That was one of most disappointing afternoons I’ve had as Middlesbrough manager,” Wilder said.

“We were slow and ponderous and I hate safe football, and I hate ponderous football.

“We had all the ball in the second half but it was a case of too little too late. “There’s no spark about us, no intensity and no ambition.”

Their blunt front line showed why they are so keen to bolster their attack with Fulham’s Brazilian striker Rodrigo Muniz who was watching from the stands.

“There were so many players who are nowhere near where they can be,” Wilder added.

“We had opportunities to throw ourselves at things in the box late on but we didn’t and that summed us up.

“A lot of players should be looking over their shoulders. We need to shake things up.”
