All aboard the cruise trip saver

- By Sean Rayment and Emer Scully

SAVERS have found a way to give spiralling costs a wide berth – by booking all-inclusive cruises instead.

The huge rise in household bills means there is not that much difference in the price of a lengthy ship holiday than staying at home.

People can swap Luton for Lisbon or Carlisle for Casablanca – for only a few extra pounds.

The combined cost of energy, food and petrol for a household is set in January to come in at more than £30 every day.

But a single person could book a place on a cruise at just £19 more per day – with the bonus of enjoying plenty of company, a change of scenery and sizzling temperatures.

Steve

Williams, director of sales at MSC Cruises, said: “We have put on a 21-night

Canaries cruise for January.

“It went on sale this week and all the agents are citing energy bills as the reason for the amazing interest it has attracted.”

Travellers pay £1,028 per person to leave Southampton on January 6 for a whistle-stop tour to the Canary Islands – taking in Le Havre, Lisbon and Casablanca.

Rather than turning on their oven to heat pricey supermarket grub, people can eat at any of 12 restaurants on deck.

Instead of running a bath, they can enjoy a dip in one of five swimming pools, chill out at a spa and take in a theatre show.

David Segel, director of another cruise outfit West End Travel, said: “People recognise that when you are on a ship and having a pretty good holiday you are not turning on your lights or gas or heating.

“There is a saving there. I have heard of people who are beginning to make this their lifestyle, and letting the ship take on the expense.”
