Fury may find need to step in

- By John Richardson

THE tremors from Worcester Warriors’ rugby union demise have been felt 160 miles away at EFL club Morecambe.

It’s “a traumatic time” in the words of the League One strugglers manager Derek Adams with Morecambe sharing the same owners but unlike their rugby twin there is a determination not to hit the canvas.

Not surprisingly, with world heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury on site with the only knockout blows so far thankfully coming in the gym he built within the Mazuma Stadium.

And with Fury, who has made the seaside town his home, already a club sponsor, there is hope that the multi millionaire will extend his commitment to the club if there is no wealthy benefactor out there.

A Fury associate maintained: “Tyson is proud to be part of the football club and there’s no way he would stand by if it got into serious financial problems. Morecambe is now his home and he loves the people here who allow him to get on with his life.”

Although Worcester Warriors co-owners Jason Whittingham and Colin Goldring, who also helped run Morecambe, have resigned from the football club’s board, the parent company Bond Group Investments have promised to stay on board until “the club find a buyer with the right ambition for the future.”

But it all leaves Adams worrying about the future. “This is a traumatic time for a lot of people inside the football club,” he admitted. “We’re up for sale which is obviously unsettling. Where is any money going to come from? Will there be new investment?

“Of course you worry about who the new owners are going to be, whether long term it’s in the best interests of everyone concerned. Selling a football club is not easy.

“It’s terrible what has happened at Worcester but we understand that we have a budget until the end of the season but we need new owners at some stage because without them the club can’t be sustainable.”
