PEP... HE’S THE GREAL DEAL NOW

-

AT ASTON VILLA, Jack Grealish was the top man.

At Manchester City, that title belongs to Kevin de Bruyne.

It was always likely, given the range of options at Pep Guardiola’s disposal, that Grealish would have to take his time and find his way.

It was never going to revolve around him at the Etihad as it did at Villa Park.

But he is now having a growing influence on Manchester City and perhaps it’s time for Guardiola to recognise that if he doesn’t have de Bruyne to call upon then Grealish (above) might be ready to step into his shoes.

It’s a big call, that one, and if I’d have been saying that six months ago, everyone would have said: ‘Leave it out, Stan, he’s miles off it.’

But Grealish can play in that No.10 role that de Bruyne has made his own.

In fact, I’d like to see it because it offers Manchester City the option of playing Phil Foden and Grealish together.

If you give the £100million man more of the ball, I guarantee you that he will make things happen.

My plea therefore is simple – and this goes for England boss Gareth Southgate, too: Don’t give him the ball out on the wing.

If you give Jack Grealish the ball as much as Kevin de Bruyne, then he will change outcomes for club and country.

A lot of people will look at him and say that he’s a second choice.

But as de Bruyne’s influence has waned a touch following the World Cup, Grealish – and Riyad Mahrez as well, to be fair – have both stepped up.

For me, the equation is simple: Don’t leave him as a bit-part player for club and country – give him the ball as much as you possibly can – and you will not be disappointed.
