Angry Pep: ‘You have to take the penalty’

the ball to clinch his hat-trick.

Leeds keeper Joel Robles finger-tipped the ball onto the post leaving Guardiola to tell Haaland (below), “you’ve got to take it”.

Seconds later Leeds broke away to score through sub Rodrigo to spark a dramatic finale with victory meaning City leapfrogged Arsenal.

Gundogan said: “First he showed to Erling he was quite mad about that and then also had a go at me.

“It is what it is at the end. The moment Erling grabbed the ball, I was sure he was going to take it.

“I checked with him a few times to make sure he was sure. He was certain to hand the ball to me and I was sure to score.

“I wish I would have scored. Looking back, the disappointment of failing to score the penalty is a bit higher than actually scoring two goals and maybe winning the game, which is a bit sad to be honest.

“But it is what it is, it’s an experience we are a bit richer with, which we can hopefully apply for the next few games.

“I’m 100 per cent certain that Erling is going to step up for the next penalty.

“We should have scored a third. This is how it is, they go on the counter and score. But we dealt quite well with it, we deserved the points.”

Guardiola said: “The game was not over. It shows how generous Erling is. If it is 4-0 with 10 minutes left, okay.

“But at 2-0? Erling is the best penalty taker right now so he has to take it. If Gundo scores, everyone is ‘Okay, hat-trick, well done’.

“But a taker is a taker. Erling is the specialist. At 2-0, this is a business, not a situation where we cannot forget it.”
