A DOCTOR suspected of murdering his wife nearly 40 years ago has died.
Friends of ex-social worker Diane Jones, 35, believe Robert Jones killed her but cheated justice.
The 80-year-old died some weeks ago in France, where he had lived for many years.
One pal, who asked not to be named, said: “It looks like he has taken the secret to his grave. It seems so wrong that he lived as a free man for 40 years. He got away with murder.”
The couple reportedly argued on the night Diane vanished from Coggeshall, Essex, in July 1983.
Her body was found in Martlesham, Suffolk, three months later. She had a fractured skull.
Mr Jones took nine days to report his wife missing.

Priya broke new ground during her three-year stint on the soap as Iqra Ahmed – Walford’s first Muslim lesbian.
A Strictly source said: “Priya was singled out as a target for wanted to play the field. And she was in tears again on Friday night after he told her he wasn’t going to “put the energy” in if she wasn’t giving the same back.
But he was called out on social media for being “controlling” and “possessive”, with one fan saying: “It’s been three days!”
Molly’s actress mum Janet admitted the scenes were hard the casting team early in the process and they were keen. She is young, glamorous and would be a great fit for the show.” Yesterday, Bobby – the son of late reality TV star to watch. She said: “Molly will always do what’s right. I think she does like Mitchel but she still wanted to talk to the others.

In 2009, Eastender favourites Zoe Lucker and Natalie Cassidy both appeared on Strictly. Earlier this year Priya teased she may return to the soap. She said: “I’m not dead. There’s always scope to come back. I think it [Iqra’s coming out] was a very important storyline and it had a huge impact.
“Things like this can be taboo but I feel like it raised a lot of awareness.”
