Aguero on course for comeback

- By Simon Mullock

CARLOS TEVEZ has revealed former Manchester City team-mate Sergio Aguero could still make a sensational comeback more than two years after being forced to retire with heart problems.

Tevez, now manager of Argentine giants Independiente, is hoping that Aguero will be able to once again play for the club after receiving an all-clear from doctors to step up his fitness regime.

A decision is expected in the coming weeks - with City’s record goalscorer due to celebrate his 36th birthday next month.

Tevez (with Aguero at City in 2012, above) promised the Buenos Aires club will take no chances with the player who made his debut for Independiente when he was just 16, before embarking on a career in Europe that took him to Atletico Madrid, City and Barcelona.

Tevez said: “It would be a very nice thing (if Aguero could play) because it would help the club and the boys a lot.

“He is doing very well and is obviously enthusiastic because the doctor told him he could try it to see how he is feeling.

“Don’t worry, he knows what he has to do to get fit – and once he does get fit he will decide what he can do.”

Aguero announced his retirement back in December 2021 after being diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia when he suffered chest pains playing for Barcelona.

He scored 260 goals in 390 appearances for City after moving to Manchester from Atletico in 2011 and won five league titles, the FA Cup and six Carabao Cups during his time at the Etihad.
