THE original name for Sutton – first recorded in the Domesday Book – was Sudstone. Disappoint­ingly this means “south farm” and not “backdoor fun”.

FORMER Conservati­ve Prime Minister Sir John Major ( right) was born in the town’s St Helier Hospital on March 29, 1943. His dad was a music hall per former.

FORMER rent boy Quentin Crisp ( below), 90 – author of The Naked Civil Servant – was born Denis Charles Pratt in Sutton in 1908.

PARALYMPIC gold medal winner David Weir, 32, hails from the next town of Wallington, which par t of the Sutton Council borough.
