ROO: WE’RE COMING TO GET YOU!
WAYNE ROONEY reckons Manchester United CAN still catch Liverpool – but only if they stun their bitter rivals at Old Trafford today. The top- four hopes of David Moyes’ side look to have died and they trail Brendan Rodgers’ men by 11 points.
United face a vital run of games, looking to overturn a 2- 0 deficit against Olympiakos in the Champions League before travelling to West Ham and hosting neighbours City in the Manchester derby.
Rooney believes that run of games can turn United’s season on its head – and he has warned Liverpool that, despite what the pundits are saying, they can still be overhauled.
“It’s a massive couple of weeks for us. Liverpool, City and Olympiakos are all stand- out games,” said Rooney.
“It’s a massive two weeks for us and if we can get the right results it will put us back on track and give us a chance to get into the top four.
“It will be tough, but we have to keep going until it’s not there or maybe we can sneak in.
“We’ll keep trying and hopefully we can do it.”
Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez have bagged 42 league goals between them as they go head to head with Rooney and Robin van Persie. Rooney admits it is key that United shackle the potent partnership – and rates fellow hitman Suarez among the best in the world.
“They’re both fantastic players. It’s particularly good to see Studge doing so well because he’s never really had the chance at his previous clubs,” added Rooney.
“Brendan Rodgers has given him his chance and he’s taken it.
“Suarez is up there with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – he’s been that good. “The two together have been great and we’ll have to do everything to stop them.”
Midfielder Jordan Henderson has guaranteed that Suarez and Sturridge will do the business if Liverpool’s nine other players can give them the platform. Henderson ( left) maintains that United’s fall from grace hasn’t taken the edge off the clash.
He said: “There has been a bit of a change in terms of the positions of the two clubs, but it’s still a big game.
“When you have our firepower, it gives the team a lot of confidence that we’re going to score goals.
“We have to make sure we defend properly as a team. If we do that, then going forward Luis and Daniel will do their stuff.”
