New King’s missus posed topless for Mexican artist
HOLD on to your castanets – it’s the incoming Queen of Spain with her top off!
Letizia Ortiz, 41, will become queen consort when her husband Felipe takes over the Spanish monarchy from his father, Juan Carlos, on June 18.
But their ten- year marriage has been dogged in controversy from the beginning, with many in the staunchly Catholic country upset that a divorcee was marrying into royalty.
There was yet more trouble when it was revealed that Letizia had become an artist’s muse while cutting her teeth as a journalist on the Mexican newspaper Siglo XXI in 1996.
Then just 24, Letizia posed topless for a photograph for Cuban painter Waldo Saavedra, who then used the image in a variety of different paintings.
Letizia may well have forgotten about the images as she went on to forge a massively successful career in TV journalism, mainly with Spanish channel TVE.
She reported live from Ground Zero following the 9/ 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and also covered the Iraq War from Baghdad in 2003.
Her engagement and later marriage to the Prince of Asturias shocked Spain, until it was revealed her first wedding had been a civil ceremony and so not recognised by the Catholic church. But then she was further embarrassed when artist Saavedra allowed the topless images to go public.
King Juan Carlos, 76, announced he was abdicating the throne in favour of his son last week.
One Spanish commentator said: “The Princess of Asturias will make a wonderful queen consort. Whatever she did in her younger days is behind her.”
